INDIA AND SOUTH KOREA SIGN TWO AGREEMENTS FOR PROMOTING BILATERAL IT COOPERATION


SHRI PRAMOD MAHAJAN & DR. YANG SEUNG TAIK DISCUSS BILATERAL INITIATIVES FOR FURTHERING IT & TELECOM COOPERATION

India and South Korea today signed two Agreements for further strategising cooperation in the IT sector between the two countries. Both countries signed a Memorandum of Understanding on establishing "The Joint Korea-India E-Governance Task Force" between the National Computerisation Agency of the Republic of Korea and the National Informatics Centre under the Department of Information Technology in the Ministry of Communications and IT. The focus of the Task Force is to collaborate on identifying best practices in the use of IT in Government. The Task Force will also identify possible applications that would facilitate the e-governance agenda in the respective countries. It is expected that this joint e-governance task force would accelerate government, academic, commercial and industry exchanges in the area of e-governance applications. The MoU was signed by Dr. Suh Sarn-Young, President of NCA, Republic of Korea and Dr. Vijay Aditya, DG, NIC on behalf of the Department of Information Technology.

The second Agreement was signed between Mr. Vivek Singhal, Chairman, ESC and Mr. Dan H Lee, President of the Korean Industry Promotion Agency. It is expected that this agreement would facilitate collaboration between Indian and Korean companies in the area of e-governance, embedded software, banking and insurance, web technology, training of professionals of computer related higher education. Both organisations have also agreed to participate and partner each other in expositions held in both countries.

Prior to the signing of the Agreements, Shri Mahajan and his Korean counterpart Dr. Yang Seung Taik held extensive discussions on issues related to IT and Telecom. Both Ministers discussed matters related to expanding access to information infrastructure, facilitating use of ICT in education and training, exchange of experts in areas of mutual interest in IT. The two Ministers also discussed cooperation in the sectors related to consumer electronics, industrial electronics and electronic components. Discussions were also held in areas related to IT security and the possibility of joint ventures in electronics hardware industry. Shri Mahajan and Dr. Taik also discussed extensively the possibility of streamlining inputs for long-term collaboration in the areas related to E-governance. The two Ministers also had delegation level talks between the two sides. Representatives included senior officials from the Department of IT and Communications.
