SHRI GANGWAR PRESIDES OVER 36TH YOUTH PARLIAMENT COMPETITION AWARDS

of State for Parliamentary Affairs & Petroleum & Natural
Gas today presided over the prize distribution function of the
36th Youth Parliament Competition, 2001-2002. Speaking
on the occasion, the Minister said, children of our country were
the hope for the millions of countrymen to carry forward the norms
of governing democracy in the years to come. To be a politically
conscious citizen, it was extremely necessary to have an understanding
of the functioning of Parliamentary norms from an early age. The
Minister called upon the participating students to inculcate the
habit of participating in healthy debates on issues of national
importance. On the occasion students of Sarvodaya Kanya Vidyalaya,
Shadi Khampur, New Delhi which stood first in the competition
also presented a short sitting of 'Youth Parliament.'
The 'Youth Parliament Scheme' was
first introduced by the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs in the
Senior Secondary Schools under the Directorate of Education, Govt.
of Delhi in 1966. In 1978, Kendriya Vidyalayas, located in and
around Delhi were incorporated into the ongoing scheme for Delhi
schools. In 1988, as a part of the celebrations commemorating
40 years of India's independence and Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru Birth
Centenary, a separate scheme of 'Youth Parliament' was launched
for Kendriya Vidyalayas. Subsequently, in 1997-98, as part of
the celebrations commemorating 50 years of India's independence,
two new National Youth Parliament Competitions were launched,
one for Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalays and the other for Universities/Colleges.
The Youth Parliament Scheme aims
at inculcating among the younger generations the spirit of self-discipline,
tolerance of diverse opinion, right expression of one's views
and other virtues of democratic living. Besides, it also acquaints
the students' community with the practices and procedures of Parliament,
techniques of debate and for developing qualities of leadership
and social responsibility.
In the 36th Youth Parliament
Competition, 2001-2002, a total of 38 schools drawn from the schools
under the Directorate of Education, Govt. of NCT of Delhi and
the New Delhi Municipal Council participated.
Sarvodaya Kanya Vidyalaya, Shadi
Khampur, New Delhi secured the first position in the competition
and was awarded the prestigious 'Pt. Motilal Nehru Running Shield'
at the Prize Distribution Function. Other trophies that were awarded
at the function was the trophy for standing first amongst new
entrant schools which was won by Swami Dayanand Sarvodaya Kanya
Vidyalaya, Old Rajinder Nagar, New Delhi, the trophy for the best
Educational District which was won by the West ‘A’ District of
the Directorate of Education of the Govt. of NCT of Delhi and
merit trophies to 10 schools for achieving meritorious position
in the competition. Besides, at the Function, individual prizes
were awarded to prize winning students of all the 38 schools which
participated in the Competition.
