DR. JOSHI CALLS FOR STRINGENT PUNISHMENT TO SEX DETERMINATION TESTS

The Minister for Human Resource Development, Dr. Murli Manohar Joshi has called for stringent punishment to sex determination tests. Despite restrictions, trade in this heinous crime continues to thrive in different parts of the country and such clinics are mushrooming all around. Law alone cannot help banish this sinful activity, as it needs greater societal awareness. Dr. Joshi was releasing here today a book "Pregnancy, Birth and Child Care" written by Dr. Sharda Jain.

Speaking about the importance of healthy mother and healthy child in national progress, Dr. Joshi said the problem of malnutrition especially of children and young mothers is a great challenge to the country. The Government has taken a number of measures including the launching of national mission on nutrition, special programmes for young married women, pregnant mothers and children as well as focussed schemes for people living below poverty line. Young women should be made aware that it is necessary to have good health, before bearing children. Dr. Joshi also spoke of the Charter of Rights for Children, equal treatment of boys and girls, banishing child marriage totally and equal educational opportunities for girl child.
