CONSUMER PRICE INDEX FOR URBAN NON-MANUAL EMPLOYEES FOR MARCH, 2002; BASE 1984-85=100


The All India Consumer Price Index for Urban Non-Manual Employees (CPI(UNME)), on base 1984-85=100, for the month of March, 2002 has been released by the Central Statistical Organisation (CSO), Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation; together with the indices for 59 selected urban centres in India. The All India CPI (UNME) for March 2002 is 395, which is 3 points more than the index for the month of February, 2002. At the major group level, the index for March, 2002 in comparison to the index for February, 2002 is mainly due to increase in the index for ‘fuel & light’. The index for the major group "Fuel & Light", has increased by 5.15% in March 2002 over the last month. At the sub-group level, the index for "Vegetables" has increased by 3.78% followed by "fruits " which increased by 3.70%. However, the index for "Condiments & Spices" decreased by 3.37%. With the corresponding All India index for March, 2001 being 377, the index for the month of March, 2002 has shown a rise of 4.8 percent over a year.

The average index for the period April 2001 to March, 2002 works out to 390, which is higher by 5.1% over the average index of 371 for the corresponding period of the previous year. Statement-1 gives the CPI (UNME) for All-India, and 59 selected urban centres in the country, for March, 2002; together with the indices for the preceding five months. The CPI (UNME) for March, 2002 in respect of four metropolitan cities of India, together with the corresponding indices for the previous month and also for March, 2001 are given below:-

Statement-2 gives a comparison of CPI (UNME) for March, 2002 in respect of 59 selected urban centres, with the indices for the corresponding month of last year, namely March, 2001. Percentage change in the index is shown in the last column. From the statement, it may be noted that the variation in the index for various centres ranges from – 3.4 to 10 percent; with the largest increase being in the case of Chennai and the decrease in the case of Srinagar. The increases has less than 0 for 1 centre, 0.1 to 2.0 percent for 1 centre, 2.1 to 4.0 percent for 22 centres, 4.1 to 6.0 percent for 22 centres, 6.1 to 8.0 percent for 9 centres and 8.1 to 10.0 percent for 4 centres. As many as 31 centres have lower annual percentage increase as compared to that of the All India figure of 4.8 percent and 25 centres have higher percentage increase as compared to the All-India figure whereas 3 centres have the same percentage increased as that the All-India figure.
