PROSPECTS OF EXPORT OF FOODGRAINS AND SUGAR TO INDONESIA

An Indonesian delegation headed by Dr. Rosediana Suharto, Expert Staff (Advisor) to the Indonesian Minister for Agriculture will be visiting India next week to explore possibilities of strengthening trade relations between the two countries. Indonesia has been showing keen interest in strengthening trade with India especially in rice wheat and sugar.

An Indian delegation had gone to Indonesia to discuss the possibilities of bilateral trade between the two countries in August-September this year. During the discussions, Indonesia has recognised the status of India as the largest exporter of rice while in terms of wheat and sugar, India ranked at fourth and twelfth positions respectively. There was scope for quantum jump in the export of these items particularly wheat if these were covered by a comprehensive counter trade agreement. The Government of Indonesia suggested an increased share in the import of palm oil by India. Regarding sugar export from India it was suggested that some mechanism should be evolved to ensure timely releases as well as a stable price regime for atleast six months.
