Indian Railways
have set up a state-of-the-art Diesel Shed at Hubli in Karnataka,
the headquarters of the newly created South Western Railway,
to house eco-friendly and high powered locomotives, in collaboration
with M/S General Motors of the USA as per transfer of technology
contract.
At present, 34
locomotives are housed in the Diesel Shed. Out of these, three
locomotives have been manufactured indigenously by the Diesel
Locomotive Works, Varanasi.
In addition, a
highly sophisticated Training Centre at a cost of Rs.5.03 crores
established to impart training to the officials for maintenance
of locomotives is under progress at Hubli. The Diesel Loco Shed
replaces the earlier shed for maintenance and repair of metre
gauge locos with the coming up of over 650 kilometres of broad
gauge in this part of the country following a massive gauge
conversion work.
