OVER THIRTY SEVEN THOUSAND STREET CHILDREN BENEFIT UNDER THE SCHEME OF SOCIAL JUSTICE MINISTRY TO PREVENT DESTITUTION

LOK SABHA

More than thirty seven thousand street children benefited under the scheme " An integrated Programme for Street Children" during the last financial year. The scheme is run by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment to prevent destitution among children and facilitate their withdrawal from a life on streets and to promote their inclusion into the national mainstream. Under the scheme financial assistance was provided to 137 non-governmental organisations in 22 states and Union Territories for running projects for the street children Regular Inspection of the projects indicated that the objectives of providing shelter, nutrition, health care, sanitation and hygiene, education and recreation facilities etc. to the destitute and neglected street children are being achieved by and large. The purpose of the inspections being carried out regularly for these projects is to ensure that living condition of these children is of minimum acceptable standards. Projects not meeting these standards are not sanctioned grant-in-aid.

The information was given by the Minister of State for Social Justice and Empowerment Shri Nagmani in a written reply in the Lok Sabha today.
