QUICK
ESTIMATES OF INDEX OF INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTION AND USE-BASED INDEX
(BASE 1993-94=100) FOR THE MONTH OF AUGUST 2002
The Quick Estimates
of Index of Industrial Production (IIP) with base 1993-94 for
the month of August 2002 have been released by the Central Statistical
Organisation. The General Index stands at 171.5 which is higher
by 5.7% as compared to the month of August 2001.
The Indices
of Industrial Production for the Mining, Manufacturing and Electricity
sectors for the month of August 2002 stand at 134.9, 177.3, and
164.2 respectively, with the corresponding growths of 6.2%, 5.9%
and 3.7% as compared to August 2001. The cumulative growth in
the three sectors during April-August, 2002 over the corresponding
period of 2001 has been 7.8%, 4.7% and 4.2%, respectively. The
overall growth in the General Index during this period has been
4.9%.
Alongwith the Quick
Estimates of IIP for August 2002, the indices for July 2002 have
undergone the first revision and those for May 2002 the second
(final) revision in the light of the updated data received from
the source agencies. There are no significant revisions in the
indices for May 2002 and July 2002.
As many as 14 of
the 17 two-digit industry groups have shown positive growth during
the month of August 2002 as compared to the corresponding month
of the previous year. Metal Products and Parts, except Machinery
and Equipment have shown the highest growth of 15.2%, followed
by 15.1% in Transport Equipment and Parts and 12.6% in Textile
Products (including Wearing Apparel) as well as Food Products.
On the other hand, Wood and Wood Products; Furniture and Fixtures
have shown a negative growth of 17.7% followed by a decline of
5.5% in Other Manufacturing Industries and 1.2% in Machinery and
Equipment other than Transport Equipment.
As per Use-based
classification, the growth in August 2002 over August 2001 is
3.8% in Basic goods, 10.0% in Capital goods and 5.0% in Intermediate
goods. The Consumer durables and Consumer non-durables have recorded
growth of (-)8.3% and 13.9% respectively, with the overall growth
in Consumer goods being 7.4%.

2-digit level of National Industrial Classification (NIC)-1987
and by Use-based classification for the month of August 2002,
along with the growth rates over the corresponding month of previous
year, including the cumulative indices and growth rates, are enclosed.
