RAILWAYS EARNINGS FROM FREIGHT
EXCEED TARGET
The Railways earned
Rs. 11006.40 crores from 223.04 Million Tonnes (MTs) freight traffic
during the first five months of the current financial year ending
August 2003 as compared to Rs. 10828.30 crores during the corresponding
period of the previous year, recording an increase of 1.64 per
cent.
Of the total earnings
from the freight traffic during the period, Rs. 4740.38 crores
came from 101.11 Million Tonnes (MTs) of coal, Rs. 472.38 crores
from 17.76 MTs of raw material to steel plants, Rs. 547.66 crores
from 5.65 MTs of finished iron and steel from steel plants, Rs.
310.52 crores from 8.75 MTs of iron ore for exports, Rs. 902.08
crores from 20.09 MTs of cement, Rs. 1320.84 crores from 19.25
MTs of foodgrains, Rs. 436.37 crores from 10.13 MTs of fertilizers,
Rs. 994.15 crores from 13.15 MTs of Petroleum Oil and Lubricant
(POL) and Rs. 1282.02 crores from 27.15 MTs of other goods.
