CARA GIVES RS. 90 LAKH TO THREE STATES FOR PROMTING ADOPTIONS
The Central Adoption
Resources Agency, CARA has provided about ninety lakh rupees as
grant-in-aid to three states for promotion of in-country adoptions
of children during the current financial year so far. Rs. 42.77
lakh have been given to Department of Women Development and Child
Welfare, Andhra Pradesh followed by Department of Social Defence,
Gujarat getting Rs. 35.42 lakh. The Department of Social Welfare,
Manipur has been provided Rs. 11.59 lakh. The grant-in-aid is
given to the government institutions and non-government organisations
under the scheme of Assistance to Homes for Children (Shishu Grah)
to promote In-Country Adoption.
CARA, an autonomous
body under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment has
given recognition to 73 agencies and 249 Enlisted Agencies, which
also include government departments in more than 25 countries,
to carry out in-country and inter-country adoption of abandoned
and orphaned children. More than 12,200 children have found homes
through recognized placement homes. These include over 7,200 in-country
adoptions and more than 5,000 inter-country adoptions. Andhra
Pradesh, Delhi, Goa, Gujarat, Haryana, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra,
Orissa, Pondicherry, Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh have active
adoption programmes. The adoption activities in other states and
union territories are picking up.
