RAILWAYS REVENUE FREIGHT EXCEEDS TARGET IN APRIL-AUGUST 2003
The Railways carried
223.20 Million Tonnes (MTs) of revenue freight during the first
five months of the current financial year from April to August
2003 as against the target of 216.79 MTs for the period, exceeding
it by 6.41 MTs. This was higher by 15.74 MTs over the corresponding
period of the previous year, wherein 207.46 MTs were transported.
The revenue freight
traffic performance of railways indicates buoyancy in the core
sector of the national economy.
The freight target
for the current financial year 2003-2004 is 540 MTs.
During August
2003, the railways transported 44.57 MTs of revenue freight as
against the target of 42.64 MTs for the month, exceeding it by
1.93 MTs. This was higher by 3.69 MTs over the corresponding month
of the previous year when the Railways carried 40.88 MTs.
