QUICK ESTIMATES OF INDEX OF INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTION AND USE-BASED INDEX FOR JULY 2003 (BASE 1993-94=100)


The Quick Estimates of Index of Industrial Production (IIP) with base 1993-94 for the month of July 2003 have been released by the Central Statistical Organisation. The General Index stands at 181.4 which is higher by 5.6% as compared to the month of July 2002.

The Indices of Industrial Production for the Mining, Manufacturing and Electricity sectors for the month of July 2003 stand at 141.2, 189.1, and 163.0 respectively, with the corresponding growths of 2.6%, 6.8% and (-)1.9% as compared to July 2002. The cumulative growths during April-July, 2003-04 over the corresponding period of 2002-03 in the three sectors have been 4.6%, 6.0% and 2.6% respectively, with the overall growth in the General Index being 5.6%.

Alongwith the Quick Estimates of IIP for July 2003, the indices for June 2003 have undergone the first revision and those for April 2003, the second (final) revision in the light of the updated data received from the source agencies. There are no significant revisions in the indices for April 2003 and June 2003. The time- series production data of Middling for April 2002 onwards have been slightly revised by the Office of Coal Controller, Kolkata. The Press Note on Quick Estimates of IIP for July 2003 also incorporates the revised time-series production data of Middling. However, it has only negligible impact on the indices of Industry Group 31: 'Rubber, Plastic, Petroleum and Coal products' for November 2002 and no impact on the overall indices of manufacturing sector.

As many as 13 of the 17 two-digit industry groups have shown positive growth during the month of July 2003 as compared to the corresponding month of the previous year. Transport Equipment and Parts have shown the highest growth of 25.1%, followed by 21.6% in Wool, Silk and Man-made Fibre Textiles and 16.2% in Basic Metal and Alloy Industries. On the other hand, Leather and Leather and Fur Products have shown a negative growth of 13.3% followed by a decline of 7.0% in Cotton Textiles and 5.4% in Metal Products and Parts, except Machinery and Equipment.

As per Use-based classification, the growth in July 2003 over July 2002 is 4.1% in Basic goods, 9.0% in Capital goods and 5.4% in Intermediate goods. The Consumer durables and Consumer non-durables have recorded growth of 6.2% and 6.3% respectively, with the overall growth in Consumer goods being 6.3%.

Statements giving Quick Estimates of the Index of Industrial Production at Sectoral, 2-digit level of National Industrial Classification (NIC)-1987 and by Use-based classification for the month of July 2003, along with the growth rates over the corresponding month of previous year, including the cumulative indices and growth rates, are enclosed.
