MICROPROCESSOR BASED SPEED RECORDERS IN LOCOMOTIVES

The Ministry of Railways has decided that henceforth all locomotives will switch over to microprocessor based paperless speed recorders. This is intended to improve safety of train services.

The existing speed recorders in use in the locomotives on the Indian Railways are of electro-mechanical type.

The 6000 high horse power electric locomotives based on M/s Asea Brown Boverie (ABB) technology and the 4000 high horse power diesel locomotives built in collaboration with M/s General Motors Corporation have microprocessor based speed recorders and controls.
