IMPROVING SAFETY ON RAILWAYS

The Ministry of Railways has sanctioned works of Mobile Train Radio Communication (MTRC) on 2400 route kilometres on important routes to provide full-fledged mobile communication from and to running train. These works are at different stages of progress and are expected to be completed in the next two to three years. This forms part of the ongoing measures for improving safety of rail services.

As an interim measure, 5 watt walki-talkie sets have been given to the loco pilots and guards of all trains to enable them to talk to each other in emergency situations. Added to this, 25 watt VHF sets at stations on important routes have been provided to enable the train crew to communicate with the nearest Station Master.

In addition, each of the Division and Zonal Railway Headquarters has been equipped with satellite phones, which can be mobilized for use during unforeseen accident like situations. These phones can be set up in minimal possible time and used by stranded passengers to communicate from the site of accident for their welfare to their relatives and near and dear ones.
