CONSUMER PRICE INDEX FOR URBAN NON-MANUAL EMPLOYEES FOR SEPTEMBER 2003 (BASE 1984-85=100)


The All-India Consumer Price Index for Urban Non-Manual Employees [CPI(UNME)], on base 1984-85=100, for the month of September, 2003 has been released by the Central Statistical Organisation (CSO), Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation; together with the indices for 59 selected urban centres in India. The All-India CPI (UNME) for September, 2003 is 420, which is the same as the index for the month of August, 2003. At the major group level, the index in September, 2003 when compared to last month that is August, 2003 has increased by 0.70% in the case of "Miscellaneous". At the sub-group level, the index for "Transport and Communication" has increased by 1.78% whereas the index for "Fruits" has decreased by –5.26%. With the corresponding All-India index for September, 2002 being 408, the index for the month of September, 2003 has shown a rise of 2.9 percent over a year.

The average index for the period April, 2003 to September, 2003 works out to 418, which is higher by 3.7% over the average index of 403 for the corresponding period of the previous year. Statement-1 gives the CPI (UNME) for All-India, and 59 selected urban centres in the country, for September, 2003; together with the indices for the preceding five months. The CPI (UNME) for September, 2003 in respect of four metropolitan cities of India, together with the corresponding indices for the previous month and also for September, 2002 are given below:-

Statement-2 gives a comparison of CPI(UNME) for September, 2003 in respect of 59 selected urban centres, with the indices for the corresponding month of last year, namely September, 2002. Percentage change in the index is shown in the last column. From the statement, it may be noted that the variation in the index for various centres ranges from 0.0 to 10.2 percent; with the largest increase being in the case of Chandigarh and the least in the case of Ajmer. The increases are 0.0 to 2.0 percent for 12 centres, 2.1 to 4.0 percent for 33 centres, 4.1 to 6.0 percent for 11 centres, 6.1 to 8.0 percent for 2 centres and more than 8.0 percent for 1 centre. As many as 23 centres have lower annual percentage increase as compared to that of the All-India figure of 2.9 percent while 34 centres have recorded a higher percentage increase as compared to the All-India average, whereas 2 centres have recorded the same percentage increase as that of All India average.
