DEVELOPMENT OF PASSENGER ELECTRIC LOCOMOTIVE

Indian Railways have developed a variant of WAG 9 electric freight locomotive indigenously for passenger services with the help of technical know-how acquired in 3-phase traction propulsion technology.

The locomotive has been classified as WAP 7 and is under service evaluation. The trials have indicated that the locomotive is capable of providing higher acceleration.

The development of this locomotive in service for super fast trains of 22-24 coaches will reduce journey time by 30-45 minutes.

Meanwhile, introduction of the state-of-art 3-phase dual voltage traction drive technology with microprocessor based control system for Electrical Multiple Units (EMUs) in Mumbai area with regenerative braking feature has resulted into energy savings of about 30 per cent. In addition, this stock has also resulted into a better riding comfort. It has also increased sectional capacity, improved reliability and reduced maintenance.
