PERFORMANCE OF RAILWAY CLAIMS CASES
The Railway claims
cases have registered a significant drop of more than 50 per cent
in 2002-2003 as compared to 1999-2000. The drop in claims cases
follows sustained preventive measures by Indian Railways to check
arising of new claims.
The number of
pending claims cases has also decreased from 35684 in 1999-2000
to 15577 in 2002-2003.
There is an impressive
reduction of 50.8 per cent in the institution of suits against
Railways, indicating improved working of claims settling machinery
of Indian Railways.
During 2002-2003,
the Railways earned Rs. 27,412 crores from transportation of goods,
luggages and parcels. This is 19.8 per cent more than the earnings
of the year 1999-2000.
In addition,
the percentage of claims paid on total earnings of railways from
goods, parcels and luggages in 2002-2003 was 0.08.
With a better
monitoring and chasing by ‘Not Received’ cell on Indian Railways
including the Railway Board, 1,21,374 lost and un-delivered consignments
of parcels and wagonload have been traced out and got delivered
to its consignees. This helped the Railways save Rs. 14,000 crores
during the last four years.
Besides, the
Railway Claims Tribunal procedures have been modified to expedite
disposal of claims by making them customer friendly.
