INDIAN TELECOM MART DRAWS HEAVY ATTENTION AT THE ITU TELECOM WORLD 2003


The Indian Telecom Mart drew heavy attention and queries in the Telecom and IT sectors at the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), Telecom World, 2003 at Geneva. According to the available information, as many as 700-800 visitors visited the pavilion per day. It is the first time that Indian private companies have participated in the event in a big way. The Pavilion under the umbrella of the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) was set up at the ITU, Telecom World, 2003 held during October 12-18, 2003 at Geneva. Besides the DoT, Department of Information Technology (DIT), the Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), the Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Limited (MTNL), Telecommunications Consultants India Limited (TCIL), Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DoT) and other companies like VSNL, Tata Teleservices, Shyam Telecom, Midas Communications and Aishwarya Telecom participated in the event.

During the week-long event, Ministerial/High-level delegations from a number of countries like Iraq, Kuwait, Bhutan, Bangladesh, etc. visited the Indian National Pavilion and expressed interest in the Indian Telecom sector particularly in the areas like E-mail on fixed telephone and fibre-to-the-home solutions besides business opportunities in the field of Telecom and IT sectors and low-cost solutions particularly for the rural areas. The Deputy Secretary General, ITU also visited the Indian National Pavilion and appreciated India’s effort in bridging the Digital Divide by providing solution like Gramin Sanchar Sewak and Internet Dhabas. The tremendous growth in the Indian Telecom Sector was appreciated by all.

A high level delegation led by the Minister of State for Communications and IT, Shri Ashok Pradhan also attended the event. The Minister had a meeting with Mr. Yoshio Utsumi, Secretary General, ITU and discussed with him the various initiatives taken by the Government to bridge the digital divide and achieve fast growth in the Indian telecom sector. Shri Pradhan also met Mr. Lyonpo Leki Dorji, Minister of Information and Communications, Government of Bhutan and offered low-cost telecom solutions for developing the telecom infrastructure of that country.
