111 NEW TOWNS SELECTED FOR INTEGRATED DEVELOPMENT


111 new towns have been identified so far under the centrally sponsored scheme called Integrated Development of Small and Medium towns, during the current year (2003-04). These include 14 towns each in Uttar Pradesh & Madhya Pradesh, 13 in Maharashtra, 10 in Karnataka, 8 each in Arunachal Pradesh, Bihar and Gujarat, 7 in Andhra Pradesh, 6 each in Haryana and Rajasthan, 5 in Chhattisgarh, 4 in Jammu & Kashmir, 2 each in Himachal Pradesh and Kerala and one each in Nagaland, Orissa, Uttranchal and Pondicherry. An amount of Rs. 98.98 crores has been allocated for the scheme during 2003-04.

Since 1979-80 to March 2003, 1340 towns in various States and Union Territories have been brought under the scheme for Integrated Development of Small & Medium Towns with an approved cost of Rs. 2461.63 crores. A sum of Rs. 605.76 crores was released to the States as Central assistance. State wise breakup of the towns covered and project cost till March, 2003 is given below: -
