BSP SAVES RS. 15 CRORE FROM IN-HOUSE
INITIATIVES
Bhilai Steel Plant
(BSP) of the Steel Authority of India Ltd. (SAIL) has been supplying
rails to the Indian Railways for over 40 years now. The product
quality and production process has improved steadily over the
years through in-house research and development in steel making
and rail rolling. At present, BSP is supplying 7.5 lakh tonnes
of prime rails annually to Indian Railways.
Two years back
Bhilai was producing around 4.7 lakh tonnes of rails annually.
Responding to the Railway's additional demand of about 2 lakh
prime rails for track replacements, 52 BSP teams helped to set
up the 6.5 lakh tonnes rail refinishing Complex in a record time
of two and a half months at a cost of Rs. 10 crore, in 2001-02.
Had the job been contracted outside it would have cost Rs. 25
crore and would have taken 15 months to complete the project.
Other initiatives
followed in other shops and some big projects were executed inhouse,
enhancing overall profitability of plant operations while fulfilling
market demands.
