LIV ULLMANN RECEIVES LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD


The Lifetime Achievement Award was conferred on the noted Norwegian Actress, Liv Ullmann by the Union Minister of Shipping and eminent film actor, Shri Shatrughan Sinha at a glittering function at the 34th International Film Festival of India – 2003 at Siri Fort here today for her intense cinematic portrail of the power and honesty of every woman. She embodies courage and vulnerability of human experience.

The Minister of Information & Broadcasting, Shri Ravi Shankar Prasad who presented a ‘Shawl’ to Ms. Liv Ullmann said that she excelled in all diverse fields of creativity and her contribution to the world of cinema as actress, writer and director has been unparalleled. Shri Prasad said that the legendary actress Ms. Ullmann encompasses in herself the finest trend of cinema and the concern for under-privileged. He said that by honouring Ms. Liv Ullmann with Lifetime Achievement Award, India is in fact honouring the world cinema at a time when Indian cinema is taking rapid strides to reach a pioneering position in the world of cinema.

Ms. Ullmann played her best roles under Swedish Director Ingmar Bergman, as in ‘En Passion’ (1969) and ‘Ansikte mot ansikte’ (1976). Her international career began with ‘Abdication’ (1974) or ‘La Diagonale du fou’ (1984). Ms. Ullmann was honoured with numerous New York Film Critics Awards during the early 1970s. She also earned Oscar nominations for her work in ‘The Emigrants’ (1971) and Bergman’s ‘Face to Face’ (1976). She continues to direct and act in numerous films and TV serials, and her recent directorial venture on the big screen was Trolosa/Faithless (2000). The 1938-born Ms. Ullmann has also been UNICEF’s goodwill ambassador for 15 years, and won a large number of awards for her performances on the screen.

Speaking on the occasion, Ms. Ullmann said cinema knows no boundaries and has inherited strength to truly integrate the society, which is full of fears and happiness. She said that diverse society has alike fears and happiness and cinema has the power to convert this into a global village.
