MAKE EDUCATION STRESS AND BURDEN FREE: DR JOSHI

Make education "stress free and burdenless for children", said Dr. Murli Manohar Joshi, the Minister for Human Resource Development, while inaugurating the 1st World Conference on "Children’s Concerns titled "Listen", organised by the Delhi Public School Society here today. The children must learn in a joyful and stress-free environment and it is the duty of the Government, the Society and the parents to provide them such an atmosphere. Dr. Joshi said that there is scope for further reducing the load on children and urged the Chairman, CBSE who was present to see what can be done about it.

Lauding the DPS society for launching the unique initiative, the Minister described it as a far-sighted vision and said, concerted efforts must be made by all in this regard. The freedom of children to speak, to choose, and shape their own destiny should not be influenced by any, as it is necessary to know the mind of the children. Greater empowerment of the child in the new millennium is a great challenge and for this, it is essential that we listen to the concerns of the children, he said. A careful assessment and evaluation of the issues confronting the millions and millions of school children across the length and breadth of the country, is a gigantic task for educationists, policy makers and administrators, he averred.

He felt that the DPS management should have involved students from the lower rungs of the society in the Conference and pointed out that while 1/6th of world children have all the facilities for better education, the remaining majority which lack these, suffer in silence. This, he said cannot continue for long and the divide must be bridged at the earliest to avoid serious consequences. He also wanted the developed nations to fulfil their commitment of "Fund-Flow" for the Education For All by 2015 programme, in the developing world.
