WORKING GROUP ON FOOD SAFETY CONSTITUTED
A Working Group on
Food Safety has been constituted by the Ministry of Consumer Affairs,
Food and Public Distribution with Director General of Bureau of
Indian Standards (BIS) as its chairman. This 24 member Working
Group was constituted on the recommendations of the meeting of
the Central Consumers Protection Council (CCPC) held in July this
year.
The Working Group
is to identify various issues relating to the safety and quality
of food products available in the market including imported items
and suggest preventive and remedial measures wherever needed.
The Group will comprise representatives from various Central Ministries
and Departments, research institutions and consumer organizations.
The Department has
also constituted a Standing Committee for Promotion of Consumer
Interests with a view to work out an effective strategy for promoting
interest of the consumer with the involvement of various stake
holders. Secretary, Department of Consumer Affairs will be the
Chairman of the Standing Committee while a nominee of Bureau of
Indian Standards, New Delhi will be its Member Secretary.
The terms and reference
of this Committee include identification of key concerns of consumers,
identifying ways and means of bringing consumer interests to the
forefront of all operations in all sectors etc. The Standing Committee
will have 21 members including chairman representing union ministries
and departments, Chambers of Commerce & Industry, voluntary
consumer organizations and consumer activists.
