BACKGROUNDER-XV
After last date of
withdrawal of nominations, number of contestants for the State
Assembly Elections to be held on 1st December, 2003
is 2171. Out of these, 878 are independent candidates. Maximum
number of independents is 10 in Chindwara and Sohagpur each. At
Umaria, Kherlangi, Berghat, Dindori, Bergi, Rajpur, Barwani and
Manawar, no independent is contesting election. Harsood is the
only constituency, where ruling party, INC will have direct fight
with main opposititon party BJP. In 13 assembly constituencies,
number of contestants is more than 16.
