RECRUITMENT IN RAILWAYS

AN APPEAL

In view of the recent disruption of train services causing inconveniences to the travelling public on account of certain misconceptions regarding the recruitment policy being followed by Railways, the Government places hereby facts to set at rest such misgivings.

Railway Recruitment Boards (RRBs) have been functioning as prime recruiting agencies for all Zonal Railways, Production Units and other extra zonal units of the Indian Railways. Regular recruitment have been done by RRBs for Group ‘C’ posts and now for Group ‘D’ posts also. Each Railway Recruitment Board is catering to the recruitment needs of the specified jurisdiction on the Railways. However, there is no regional or linguistic distinction for recruitment to any post as far as eligibility of the candidates is concerned. As per a judgement of the Supreme Court of India, while inviting the applications, wide publicity must be given in local and national dailies, and Employment Exchanges so that equal opportunities are given to all citizens.

Railway Recruitment Board, Guwahati is specifically catering to the needs of the Northeast Frontier Railway spread primarily over the States of Assam, West Bengal and Bihar. Any citizen of India fulfilling the recruitment criteria can compete for any post without any regional or linguistic limitations. Same principle of recruitment is followed by all the 19 Railway Recruitment Boards of the Indian Railways as also generally followed by all Central Government employment agencies.

As per the rules of recruitment notified by Department of Personnel and Training, Ministry of Personnel, Pension and Public Grievances, there are laid down percentages/quotas to be filled up by Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes/Other Backward Classes, and ex-servicemen. There may be some variation in the eligibility conditions for these specified categories but again without any distinction on regional or linguistic bias.

It is, therefore, reiterated that recruitment on the Railways is being done in a fair manner as provided for in the Constitutional framework of India and directed by the Supreme Court of India. All citizens are, therefore, urged to maintain peace to help the Railways run for the benefit of the public at large.
