ADMISSIONS TO MCA ON ALL INDIA BASIS TO BE THROUGH COMMON ENTRANCE TEST

FIRST AIMCET ON JUNE 6, 2004

Admission on all India basis to the Master of Computer Applications programme (MCA) in all institutions in the country will be made through a common entrance test from the academic year 2004-2005. The first Common Entrance Test for MCA (AIMCET) will be held on June 6, 2004 in 98 cities throughout the country.

This decision was taken at the meeting of the National Advisory Board* for conduct AIMCET held under the chairmanship of Shri S.K. Tripathi, Secretary, Secondary & Higher Education earlier this week.

The Board has decided that for the first year 2004-05 AIMCET will be conducted by IIT Roorkee. IIT Roorkee is the only IIT having an MCA programme. IIT Roorkee has the experience of conducting such tests in the past.

AIMCET is for those institutions that are presently holding their own entrance tests and admitting all their students or certain percentage of them on all India basis. All states will continue to hold their own common entrance tests for admission to MCA programmes in institutions within their states as before. However, these tests will be restricted to students from within the state only. Students admitted on All India basis in the state level institutions will be admitted only on the basis of AIMCET. Further, many states that may not like to conduct their own tests could use the merit determined by the All India Test.

AICTE has already issued guidelines for admission to MCA programmes on the lines above. All AICTE approved MCA programmes are required to admit students on the basis of AIMCET only. UGC has also written to universities asking them to ensure that admission in MCA programmes is only through AIMCET.

The Common Entrance Test is being held in pursuance to judgement of Hon’ble Supreme Court on the issue.
