RCI DEVELOPS 34 TRAINING COURSES
FOR PROFESSIONALS CONNECTED WITH DISABILITY
The Rehabilitation
Council of India (RCI) has during the last three years developed
34 long-term and short-term training programmes for personnel
and professionals involved with the rehabilitation of persons
with disabilities. With this the total number of training programmes
developed or standardised has reached upto 87. These programmes
are devised for the Masters, Post Graduate Diploma, Degree, Diploma
and Certificate level to meet the manpower requirements of 16
categories of rehabilitation professionals. Universities, National
Institutes and NGOs have adopted these. The development and standardization
of training programmes is a continuous process and new programmes
are being developed according to the needs of the country.
The Experts appointed
by the RCI visit various universities and institutions to evaluate
the training infrastructure approved for running courses in the
field of rehabilitation and special education. 160 institutions
have been recognised so far to run courses at different levels.
The Council has registered about 22 thousand professional’s upto
December 2002.
RCI has trained over
11,200 Medical Officers working in Primary Health Centres in order
to orient them towards disability issues including early detection,
intervention and rehabilitation. The Council launched the B.Ed.
(Special Education) course to met the requirement of special trained
teachers. The course is run through distant modes in collaboration
with M P Bhoj (Open) University. 960 candidates joined the course
last year while 1500 candidates have joined it this year.
