QUICK ESTIMATES OF INDEX OF INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTION AND USE-BASED INDEX (BASE 1993-94=100) FOR SEPTEMBER, 2003


The Quick Estimates of Index of Industrial Production (IIP) with base 1993-94 for the month of September 2003 have been released by the Central Statistical Organisation. The General Index stands at 182.9 which is higher by 6.5% as compared to the month of September 2002.

The Indices of Industrial Production for the Mining, Manufacturing and Electricity sectors for the month of September 2003 stand at 136.5, 191.0, and 167.4 respectively, with the corresponding growths of 4.4%, 6.8% and 5.0% as compared to September 2002. The cumulative growths during April-September, 2003-04 over the corresponding period of 2002-03 in the three sectors have been 4.2%, 6.3% and 2.9% respectively, with the overall growth in the General Index being 5.8%.

Alongwith the Quick Estimates of IIP for September 2003, the indices for August 2003 have undergone the first revision and those for June 2003, the second (final) revision in the light of the updated data received from the source agencies. While there are no significant revisions in the sectoral/general indices for June 2003, the index for August 2003 in respect Mining sector have undergone revision of (-)1.0%. The downward revision in the Mining Sector's index has been due to revision in the production data of Coal, Lignite, Chromite, Iron Ore, Lead Concentrate, Zinc Concentrate, Phosphorite, Kaolin and Limestone.

As many as 11 of the 17 two-digit industry groups have shown positive growth during the month of September 2003 as compared to the corresponding month of the previous year. 'Paper & Paper Products and Printing, Publishing & Allied Industries' have shown the highest growth of 29.7%, followed by 25.2% in 'Wood and Wood products; Furniture and Fixtures' and 22.6% in 'Transport Equipment and Parts'. On the other hand, 'Jute and Other Vegetable Fibre textiles (except cotton)' have shown a negative growth of 10.7% followed by a decline of 7.8% in 'Cotton Textiles' and 2.1% in 'Other Manufacturing Industries'.

As per Use-based classification, the growth in September 2003 over September 2002 is 5.9% in Basic goods, 9.1% in Capital goods and 6.4% in Intermediate goods. The Consumer durables and Consumer non-durables have recorded growth of 8.2% and 5.7% respectively, with the overall growth in Consumer goods being 6.4%.

Statements giving Quick Estimates of the Index of Industrial Production at Sectoral, 2-digit level of National Industrial Classification (NIC)-1987 and by Use-based classification for the month of September 2003, along with the growth rates over the corresponding month of previous year, including the cumulative indices and growth rates, are enclosed.

Note: The release of the index for October, 2003 will be on Friday, 12 December, 2003.
