KALKA SIMLA RAILWAY COMPLETES 100
YEARS ON NOVEMBER 9
The Kalka-Simla
Railway (KSR), built to connect the then summer capital of India
at an altitude of 2076 metres, completes 100 years on November
9, 2003.
Laid out on a 96
kilometres long narrow gauge track through 107 tunnels with more
than 800 bridges and viaducts, the Kalka-Simla Railway is the
most beautiful hill Railway in India, cherished as the "Crown
Jewel" of Indian National Railways during the British India.
The KSR offers a
panoramic feast to travellers who experience the grandeur of the
picturesque Himalayas from the Shivalik foot hills at Kalka to
several important points like Dharampur, Solan, Kangra Ghat, Taradevi,
Bargo, Salogra, Summer Hill Simla and beyond upto the silvery
snow line near the towering peaks.
Travel by Rail on
this line has a special charm unparalleled elsewhere. This comprises
Rail Moror Car, the Shivalik Deluxe Express (popularly known as
the Toy Shatabdi), Deluxe Motor Car and Shivalik Palace.
Recently, an original
steam locomotive on this line has been restored successfully for
Heritage Tourism and excursions.
This small Railway
has witnessed a plethora of technology changes with steam, petrol
and diesel power for train running on its hilly terrain.
The KSR is considered
the greatest narrow gauge engineering marvel in India through
rough and hilly terrain with outstanding engineering works of
construction.
This line also contributed
to the speedy development of Simla.
