RS. 310 CRORE APPROVED FOR MODERNISATION OF ENGINEERING INSTITUTIONS

TECH UPGRADTION PROGRAMME TO COVER 13 STATES, ALL NITs IN NEXT CYCLE

The Central Government has approved Rs. 310 crore to 40 selected institutions in six states for modernization of their facilities. The approval comes from the National Selection Committee of the Technical Quality Improvement Programme (TEQIP) which met under the Education Secretary, Shri Sant Kumar Tripathi.

The institutes will utilized the funds in modernizing labs, upgrading equipment, books, staff development, community services and industry-institute relationship, and repairs and renovation of existing buildings. This is the first cycle and more funds will be sanctioned in the second cycle after the institutes have utilized this amount.

The total Project cost of TEQIP, which is to be implemented during the current Five Year Plan, is Rs. 1550 crore.

TEQIP is being implemented in six states for improvement of quality of technical education and enhancing existing capacities of well-performing engineering institutions. The first cycle of TEQIP is being implemented in Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh. Forty well-performing engineering institutions from these States have been selected to participate: of these, 12 are lead institutions and 28, network institutions. With such technological upgradation, these institutions are expected to become dynamic, demand-driven, efficient and responsive to rapid economic and technological developments occurring both at national and international levels.

The National Selection Committee has also selected seven new states, namely, Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Uttranchal and West Bengal to participate in the second cycle. About 50 well-performing engineering institutions from these states will be able to participate in TEQIP and achieve academic excellence.

Another important decision taken by the National Selection Committee is to involve all the 17 NITs in TEQIP and make them world-class Centres of Excellence. Five NITs located at Allahabad, Bhopal, Calicut, Kurukshetra and Nagpur are already participating in the first cycle of TEQIP, and the remaining NITs will benefit through participation in second cycle of the programme.
