INDIAN COMMUNITY IN KUWAIT IS SAFE : CIVIL AVIATION SECRETARY


Indian community in Kuwait is absolutely safe and life there is unaffected by the conflict in Iraq. This was stated by the Civil Aviation Secretary Shri K. Roy Paul here today. Shri Roy Paul, who was deputed by the Government of India to take stock of the situation in Kuwait, returned yesterday after paying a three-day visit. He said, during the visit he met Kuwaiti authorities and thanked them for the steps taken for the safety of the Indian community. He also met the representatives of Indian community there and assured them the Government of India will do everything it can to ensure their safety.

Asked whether the contingency plan to evacuate Indians from there will be implemented, he said, we are not anticipating that kind of situation to arise. Shri Roy Paul said, however, the Government is committed to ensure the safety of our citizens. He said, Air India and Indian Airlines are operating all their flights. Kuwait airport and Kuwait airspace are both open.

The Secretary clarified that the Rs.3,000 one way fare hike from Kuwait was applicable only to the special flights, as the flights were going empty from here. Now, the fare charged is normal.
