NEW INITIAITVES OF RAILWAYS IN IMPROVING PASSENGER AMENITIES


With the introduction of all the 16 Janshatabadis, a new set of fast intercity trains, having ordinary second class chair cars and ergonomically designed comfortable seats during the current financial year 2002-2003, capacity to carry suburban passengers is being augmented in metro cities. This would provide the critical infrastructure for sustenance of economic and social life of metro cities.

Besides, frontline staff is being trained for a better user friendly services.

A pilot project for computerized issue of tickets for unreserved services, introduced this year on Northern Railway, has been sanctioned to facilitate issue of such tickets in advance also. It would finally cover about 12 million passengers daily including sub-urban passengers traveling on monthly and quarterly season tickets all over the country.

In addition, computerized passenger reservation terminals are being provided at all district headquarters.

Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation has set up plants for manufacture of packaged drinking water at Nangloi in Delhi and Danapur in Bihar under the brand name of ‘Rail Neer’ to provide portable drinking water to rail passengers. The ‘Rail Neer’ would be launched soon with the necessary clearance from the Bureau of Indian Standards.
