MOST TRANSPARENT SURVEY ORGANIZATION
MUST ALSO TAKE NEW CHALLENGES: S.B. MOOKHERJEE
NATIONAL
SEMINAR ON NSS 56th ROUND INAUGURATED
The National Sample
Survey Organisation (NSSO) has become the most transparent survey
organisation in the world, by releasing the unit level data sets
along with the survey results. Now it should be prepared to face
the challenge posed by increasing demand for data on emerging
areas of the economy like modern services. The Minisrer of State
for Statistics and Programme Implementation Shri S. B. Mookherjee
made this remark while inaugurating the national seminar on the
NSS 56th Round Results here today.
The Minister said
that introduction of first such seminar in 2001 had set up a trend
in openness and generation of interactive outputs, which would
definitely enhance transparency and quality in survey results.
He hoped that the deliberations in the seminar would lead to a
better understanding of the economy and positive suggestions for
the improvement of survey activities.
Attended by more
than 150 academicians, researchers, official statisticians and
experts, the seminar provided a forum for them to present their
views on the survey results and interpret the trends in economic
and social development. The seminar threw new ideas for improvement
of data in terms of coverage and techniques.
The NSSO conducts
both household and enterprise surveys. Some of the important subjects
covered regularly are consumer expenditure, employment-unemployment,
land and livestock holdings, debt and investment, social consumption,
housing condition, disability, and unorganised enterprises in
the non-agricultural sector. Results of these surveys are used
by the Planning Commision for the estimation of poverty ratios.
The NSS has so far
completed 58 rounds of surveys and brought out 480 reports since
its establishment in 1950. The 56th round of survey
was conducted during July 2000 to June 2001 mainly devoted to
unorganized manufacturing sector in India.
