CONSUMER PRICE INDEX FOR URBAN NON-MANUAL EMPLOYEES FOR FEBRUARY, 2003 (BASE 1984-85=100)


The All India Consumer Price Index for Urban Non-Manual Employees (CPI(UNME)), on base 1984-85=100, for the month of February, 2003 has been released by the Central Statistical Organisation (CSO), Ministry of Statistics & Programme Implementation; together with the indices for 59 selected urban centres in India. The All India CPI (UNME) for January 2003 is 408, which is 2 points more than the index for the month of January, 2003. At the major group level, the index in February, 2003 when compared to last month that is January, 2003 has increased by 0.51% in the case of "Food and Beverages & Tobacco" and 0.24% in case of "Miscellaneous". At the sub-group level, the index for "Oils & Fats" has increased by 2.42% while that for "Fruits" has increased by 2.27%. However, the indices for "Sugar, Honey etc." and "Condiments & Spices" have been decreased by 1.12% and 1.07% respectively. With the corresponding All-India index for February 2002 being 392, the index for the month of February, 2003 has shown a rise of 4.1 percent over a year.

The average index for the period April, 2002 to February, 2003 works out to 405 which is higher by 3.8% over the average index of 390 for the corresponding period of the previous year. Statement-1 gives the CPI (UNME) for All-India, and 59 selected urban centres in the country, for February, 2003; together with the indices for the preceding five months. The CPI (UNME) for February, 2003 in respect of four metropolitan cities of India, together with the corresponding indices for the previous month and also for February, 2002 are given below:-

Statement-2 gives a comparison of CPI (UNME) for February, 2003 in respect of 59 selected urban centres, with the indices for the corresponding month of last year, namely February, 2002. Percentage change in the index is shown in the last column. From the statement, it may be noted that the variation in the index for various centres ranges from 0.3 to 9.3 percent; with the largest increase being in the case of Mangalore and the least in the case of Asansol. The increases are 0.1 to 2.0 percent for 6 centres, 2.1 to 4.0 percent for 31 centres, 4.1 to 6.0 percent for 18 centres, 6.1 to 8.0 percent for 3 centres and 8.0 percent for 1 centre. As many as 37 centres have lower annual percentage increase as compared to that of the All India figure of 4.1 percent while 20 centres have recorded a higher percentage increase as compared to the All-India average whereas 2 centre has the same percentage increase as that of All-India figure.
