INSURGENT OUTFITS OPERATING IN THE
NORTH-EAST
RAJYA SABHA
The Raya Sabha was
informed that the following insurgent groups are operating in
the country:

While ULFA, BDFB,
PLA, UNLF, NLFT, NNC/A, NSCN(K) have sizable cadre strength, the
other insurgent groups are operating with fewer cadre strength.
Government has
taken various steps to tackle the terrorist outfits. These include,
inter-alia, deployment of para-military Forces and Army in the
State, coordinated action by Army, Para-military Forces and State
Police for counter insurgency operations, declaration of major
insurgent groups as unlawful association under the Unlawful Activities
(Prevention) Act, 1967, declaration of the entire State of Assam
as "disturbed area" under the Armed Forces (Special
Powers) Act, 1958; reimbursement of security related expenditure
to the State Government and modernization/upgradation of State
Police Force. The Governments have been appealing to the insurgent
outfits to give up violence, join the mainstream and settle the
problems through negotiation within the Constitutional framework.
The Minister
of State for Home, Shri I.D. Swami said this in a written reply
in the House today.
