STEPS TAKEN BY GOVERNMENT TO PROVIDE EMPLOYMENT TO UNEMPLOYED PERSONS

Government is implementing special programmes for eradication of poverty and generation of employment. These include Swarna Jayanti Gram Swarozgar Yojana (SJGSY), Jawahar Gram Smridhi Yojana (JGSY), Employment Assurance Scheme (EAS), Pradhan Mantri Gram sadak Yojana (PMGSY), Swarna Jayanti shahari rozgar Yojana (SJSRY) and Food for work programme. Prime Minister's Rozgar Yojana (PMRY) is also being implemented to provide employment opportunities to educated unemployed youth.

The special Group headed by Dr. S.P Gupta, Member, Planning Commission was constituted to suggest strategy and programme for creation of one crore employment opportunities per year during each year of the 10th Plan period. The Group proposed creation of 5 crore opportunities over the 10th Plan period. Out of these, nearly 2 crore have to come from specific employment generation programmes and 3 crore from growth buoyancy.

Number of job-seekers, all of whom are not necessarily unemployed, on the live register of employment exchanges in the country as on 31st December, 2000, 2001 and 30th November, 2002 (latest available) are 41343.6, 41995.9 and 41487.2 respectively.
