PROBLEMS OF FERRO ALLOYS INDUSTRY

LOK SABHA

Basic customs duty on ferro alloys has remained unchanged since 2001-2002. Further, import duty on metcoke for the manufacturers of ferro alloys has been reduced to 5 per cent and anti-dumping duty on Chines metcoke has been withdrawn. These measures benefit the Ferro Alloys Manufacturers and Traders in the country.

Problems faced by Ferro Alloys manufactures and traders are: high power tariff, excess capacity and stagnant domestic demand, cheap imports from China, Russia, Kazakhastan and South Africa, imports from neighbouring countries, such as, Bhutan and Nepal which do not attract countervailing duty, sales tax, high excise duty and increase in input cost, road and railway freight.

This information was given by the Minister for Steel, Shri Braja Kishore Tripathy in a written reply in the Lok Sabha today.
