Dr. JATIYA URGES STATES TO SPEED UP SURVEY OF WAKF PROPERTIES


Centre has urged the States and Union Territories to speed up survey of the Wakf properties to protect them from encroachments. Presiding over the 46th Meeting of the Central Wakf Council here today, the Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment Dr. Satyanarayan Jatiya expressed concern over large scale illegal occupation of Wakf properties. He urges the Council to take immediate action against such encroachments. Emphasizing the need for quick disposal of the cases by Wakf Tribunals, Dr. Jatiya said that any legal hurdles in this regard can be removed. He said that three lakh Wakf properties have been registered so far as a result of survey in various states. The Minister said that centre has provided Rs. 23.82 crore as grant-in-aid to the Central Wakf Council for development of Wakf properties. The Council in turn has advanced loans to State Wakf Boards on very easy terms for construction on hospitals, hostels and income generating projects on urban Wakf properties. 118 such projects have been completed and 50 others are in progress.

Referring to the Education scheme of the Central Wakf Council run with the income generated from Wakf properties, Dr, Jatiya urged the council to set up a girls hostel in each district headquarter. He said that would largely contribute to promotion of education among Muslims girls. Dr. Jatiya said the Council has helped 596 NGOs for promoting vocational education among Muslims. Dr. Jatiya suggested setting up of Wakf Educational Pool by the Central Wakf Council with contributions from State Wakf Boards out of money received by them for promotion of education.

The Education Fund set up by the Central Wakf Council is constituted with the six percent donation received from the loanee Wakfs on the outstanding loans for development of urban Wakf properties as well as interest accured on the Bank deposits of the Revolving Fund of the Council.
