REVISED
ESTIMATES OF ANNUAL NATIONAL INCOME, 2001-02
AND
QUARTERLY ESTIMATES OF GROSS DOMESTIC PRODUCT, 2001-02
The Central Statistical
Organisation (CSO), Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation,
has released the revised estimates of national income for the
financial year 2001-02 at constant (1993-94) and current prices.
Further, the CSO has also released the quarterly estimates of
Gross Domestic Product (GDP) for the fourth quarter [Jan-Mar (Q4)]
of 2001-02, both at constant (1993-94) and current prices.
I REVISED
ANNUAL ESTIMATES FOR THE YEAR 2001-02
The advance estimates
of national income for the year 2001-02 were released on 5th
February 2002. These estimates have now been revised incorporating
latest estimates of agricultural production, index of industrial
production and performance of key sectors like, railways, transport
other than railways, communication, banking and insurance and
government expenditure.
The salient features
of these estimates are detailed below:
(a)
Estimates at constant (1993-94) prices
Gross
Domestic Product
GDP at factor
cost at constant (1993-94) prices in the year 2001-02 is now estimated
at Rs. 12,58,231 crore (as against Rs. 12,58,808 crore estimated
earlier), showing a growth rate of 5.4 per cent (same growth rate
as estimated earlier) over the Quick Estimates of GDP for the
year 2000-01 of Rs. 11,93,922 crore, released on 31st
January 2002.
The sectors which
showed growth rates of over 5 per cent are "agriculture,
forestry and fishing" (5.7 per cent, which is the same as
estimated earlier), "trade, hotels, transport and communication"
(6.2 per cent as compared to 6.3 per cent earlier), "financing,
insurance, real estate & business services" (7.8 per
cent as compared to 7.5 per cent earlier) and "community,
social & personal services" (5.9 per cent as compared
to 6.0 per cent earlier). The sectors "mining & quarrying"
(1.8 per cent as compared to 1.4 per cent earlier), "manufacturing"
(2.8 per cent as compared to 3.3 per cent earlier), "electricity,
gas & water supply" (4.6 per cent as compared to 5.2
per cent earlier), and "construction (3.6 per cent as compared
to 2.9 per cent earlier), however, recorded low growth rates during
the year.
National
Income
The net national
product (NNP) at factor cost, also known as national income, at
1993-94 prices is now estimated at Rs. 11,04,689 crore (as compared
to Rs. 11,01,065 crore estimated earlier), during 2001-02, as
against the previous year’s Quick Estimate of Rs. 10,44,915 crore.
In terms of growth rates, the national income is estimated to
rise by 5.7 per cent during 2001-02 in comparison to the growth
rate of 3.7 per cent in 2000-01.
Per
Capita Income
The per capita income
in real terms (at 1993-94 prices) during 2001-02 is estimated
to attain a level of Rs. 10653 (as against Rs. 10618 estimated
earlier), as compared to the Quick Estimates for the year 2000-01
of Rs. 10254. The growth rate in per capita income is estimated
at 3.9 per cent during 2001-02, as against the previous year’s
estimate of 1.9 per cent.

Estimates at current prices
Gross
Domestic Product
GDP at factor
cost at current prices in the year 2001-02 is estimated at Rs.
20,68,810 crore, showing a growth rate of 9.1 per cent over the
Quick Estimates of GDP for the year 2000-01 of Rs. 18,95,843 crore,
released on 31st January 2002.
National
Income
The NNP at factor
cost at current prices is now estimated at Rs. 18,39,232 crore
during 2001-02, as compared to Rs. 16,79,982 crore during 2000-01
showing a rise of 9.5 per cent.
Per
Capita Income
The per capita income
at current prices during 2001-02 is estimated to attain a level
of Rs. 17736 as compared to the Quick Estimates for the year 2000-01
of Rs. 16487, showing a rise of 7.6 per cent.
Estimates of
gross/net national product, gross/net domestic product and per
capita income, alongwith GDP at factor cost by kind of economic
activity, for the years 1999-2000, 2000-01 and 2001-02, at constant
(1993-94) and current prices are given in Statements 1 to 4.
II QUARTERLY
ESTIMATES OF GDP FOR THE QUARTER JAN-MAR 2001
(a)
Estimates at constant (1993-94) prices
12. The four quarters
of a financial year are denoted by Q1, Q2, Q3 and Q4. GDP at factor
cost at constant (1993-94) prices in Q4 of 2001-02 is estimated
at Rs. 3,41,580 crore, as against Rs. 3,21,131 crore in Q4 of
2000-01, showing a growth rate of 6.4 per cent. The sectors which
registered significant growth rates in Q4 of 2001-02 over Q4 of
2000-01 are "agriculture, forestry and fishing" at 7.6
per cent, "electricity, gas and water supply" at 5.4
per cent, "construction" at 7.5 per cent, "trade,
hotels, transport, and communication" at 7.2 per cent, "financing,
insurance, real estate and business services" at 8.3 per
cent and "community, social and personal services" at
5.6 per cent. The "mining & quarrying", and "manufacturing"
sectors showed growth rates of less than 5 per cent.
(b)
Estimates at current prices
GDP at factor
cost at current prices in Q4 of 2001-02 is estimated at Rs. 5,61,483
crore, as against Rs. 5,15,315 crore in Q4 of 2000-01, showing
a rise of 9.0 per cent.
Estimates of
GDP at factor cost by kind of economic activity for the four quarters
of 1999-2000, 2000-01 and 2001-02 at constant (1993-94) and current
prices, alongwith the growth rates, are given in Statements 5
and 6, respectively.
- The next release
of quarterly GDP estimate for the quarter April-June, 2002 (Q1
of 2002-03) will be on 30.09.2002.
