QUICK ESTIMATES OF INDEX OF INDUSTRIAL PRODUCTION AND USE-BASED
INDEX (BASE 1993-94=100) FOR THE MONTH OF APRIL, 2003
The Quick Estimates
of Index of Industrial Production (IIP) with base 1993-94 for
the month of April 2003 have been released by the Central Statistical
Organisation. The General Index stands at 175.2 which is higher
by 4.9% as compared to the month of April 2002.
The Indices of Industrial
Production for the Mining, Manufacturing and Electricity sectors
for the month of April 2003 stand at 138.1, 181.5, and 164.3 respectively,
with the corresponding growths of 8.3%, 5.0% and 1.9% as compared
to April 2002.
Alongwith the Quick
Estimates of IIP for April 2003, the indices for March 2003 have
undergone the first revision and those for January 2003, the second
(final) revision in the light of the updated data received from
the source agencies. While there are no significant revisions
in the indices of manufacturing and electricity sectors, the index
of mining sector for January 2003 has been lowered by 1.3% due
to downward revision of the production of Coal and Lignite. There
is no significant revision in the indices for March 2003. The
revised annual growth in the three sectors during 2002-03 over
the previous year i.e. 2001-02 has been 5.7%, 6.0% and 3.2%, respectively
with the overall growth in the General Index being 5.7%.
As many as 11
of the 17 two-digit industry groups have shown positive growth
during the month of April 2003 as compared to the corresponding
month of the previous year. Beverages, Tobacco and Related Products
have shown the highest growth of 33.6%, followed by 27.1% in Transport
Equipment and Parts and 18.4% in Rubber, Plasric, Petroleum and
Coal Products. On the other hand, Wool, Silk and Man-made Fibre
Textiles have shown a negative growth of 26.1% followed by a decline
of 19.7% in Textile Products (including Wearing Apparel) and 8.1%
in Cotton Textiles.
As per Use-based
classification, the growth in April 2003 over April 2002 is 3.9%
in Basic goods, 9.0% in Capital goods and 4.1% in Intermediate
goods. The Consumer durables and Consumer non-durables have recorded
growth of (-)2.2% and 8.3% respectively, with the overall growth
in Consumer goods being 5.8%.
Statements giving
Quick Estimates of the Index of Industrial Production at Sectoral,
2-digit level of National Industrial Classification (NIC)-1987
and by Use-based classification for the month of April 2003, along
with the growth rates over the corresponding month of previous
year, including the cumulative indices and growth rates, are enclosed.
