RAILWAY PRODUCTION UNITS TO GET
MORE AUTONOMY
The Government in
the Ministry of Railways has planned to give more autonomy to
the General Managers of Railway Production Units to enable them
to function more efficiently.
The proposed autonomy
is designed to make the Production Units take investment decisions
and freedom to adopt more competitive pricing and powers for marketing
their products and services both in the domestic and international
markets.
There are six Production
Units. These are Integral Coach Factory (ICF), Chennai, Rail Coach
Factory (RCF), Kapurthala, Chittaranjan Locomotive Works (CLW),
Diesel Locomotive Works (DLW), Varanasi, Rail Wheel Factory (RWF),
Bangalore and Diesel Component Works (DCW), Patiala. All the six
Production Units are departmental and not public sector undertakings.
At present, the production
capacity of all the six Production Units is surplus to the present
requirements of Indian Railways.
The proposed autonomy
to these Production Units will enable them to compete globally
in the emerging globalisation of Indian economy under the World
Trade Organisation (WTO) regime.
