BORDER FENCING WORK ALONG INDIA-PAKISTAN AND INDIA-BANGLADESH BORDER IN PROGRESS

1500 KM. FENCING COMPLETED IN PUNJAB AND RAJASTHAN SECTOR


The work of security fencing along Indo-Pakistan and Indo-Bangladesh border is in progress. CPWD, under the Ministry of Urban Development, has primarily been entrusted with the job which includes building of roads along the fencing and flood lighting along the same.

INDO-PAKISTAN BORDER

The border runs along Jammu, Punjab, Rajasthan and Gujarat for a length of about 2,300 km (excluding the Kashmir border portion which is under partial occupation of Pakistan). CPWD has already completed the work of border fencing in Punjab and Rajasthan sectors for a length of 1500 km. along with construction of roads for a length 230 km. Flood lighting has also been carried out in these sectors for the entire length. Besides obtaining electric supply from respective Electricity Boards, stand by Generating Sets have been provided to maintain reliability of flood lighting system by CPWD.

Currently CPWD is engaged in the construction of Fencing along with road and flood lighting in the Gujarat Sector where the border passes through difficult area of Rann of Kutch. Government has already taken a decision to fence 310 km. out of the total 508 km. of the border in Gujarat Sector. CPWD has since completed the work of fencing in a length of 62 km. along with road and flood lighting and further works are in progress.

In Jammu sector, border fencing and flood lighting work is being carried out by the BSF. Out of 180 km., fencing work has been completed in 70 km. Likewise flood lighting work has been completed in 40 km.

INDO-BANGLADESH BORDER

India & Bangladesh have a common border of 4096 km. Passing through riverine and low lying areas in West Bengal, Assam and hilly terrains in Tripura, Mizoram and Meghalaya. Central PWD has already constructed 1700 km. of road along with 130 bridges and large numbers of culverts, along the border in West Bengal Sector.

In addition around 750 km. of security fencing has also been completed and remaining works of fencing are in progress. The entire feasible fencing of 1350 km. in West Bengal Sector is targeted to be completed by December, 2005.

Both road and security fencing works in North-Eastern States being executed by other agencies like Assam PWD, BRO, NBCC are also being coordinated by CPWD, who is also entrusted with the task of maintenance of entire IBB Road well over 2500 km. in all the 5 States bordering Bangladesh.
