Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP) of Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Ltd. (RINL) a public sector unit of the Steel Ministry registered record sales of Rs. 335 crore during the month of May 2003 surpassing the previous best of Rs. 320 crore in May, 2002 with a growth of 5 per cent . It is the best performance for any May, since inception.

On the production front all major units have recorded their best May production performance since inception. Production of sinter and hot metal recorded best ever month performance since inception. The plant produced 519651 tonnes of sinter, 360142 tonnes of hot metal, 306557 tonnes of liquid steel, 288533 tonnes of cast bloom, 162014 tonnes of billets, 68555 tonnes of bars, 82327 tonnes of MMSM, 250015 tonnes of saleable steel and 57057 tonnes of value added steel during the month.

During the month,it achieved the highest labour productivity of 271 tonnes/man-year and lowest ever specific energy consumption of 5.92 giga calories/tonne of liquid steel for any month since inception. During the month capital repairs of wire rod mill was successfully completed.
