BARC SEMINAR TO MARK "WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY"

The Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Mumbai is organising a national seminar on Thursday i.e. June 5, 2003 to mark the "World Environment Day", to underscore the importance of Environment Conservation and Preservation of Ecology. Keeping this in view, the BARC has chosen as the focal theme, "Environmental Protection Strategies for Sustainable Development." The BARC is organising this in collaboration with the H.N.Bahuguna Garhwal University as well as the Narora Atomic Power Station, Uttar Pradesh. Concerned so much with preservation of nature and ecology, the BARC has a health, Safety and Environment Group which organises national seminars to mark the World Environment Day and this seminar, the 12th in the series will be inaugurated by the Chairman Atomic Energy Commission, Dr. Anil Kakodkar.

Gas emissions, climate change, ozone layer depletion etc. are some of the global problems being addressed through the Montreal and Kyoto Protocols. Current approaches in environmental planning have shifted from the end of pipe mitigation to zero based emission strategies. While the conventional energy sector is faced with emission reduction obligations, nuclear power is being accepted world over as a viable alternative. Green technology concepts are also emerging as the future strategy for environmental management.

Nuclear power is one area which is very environment friendly and pollution-free. Eco-friendly disposal of bio-wastes and safety performance of our nuclear power plants make it, all the more preferable source of energy.
