ALL INDIA CONSUMER PRICE INDEX NUMBERS FOR INDUSTRIAL WORKERS ON BASE 1982=100 FOR THE MONTH OF JUNE, 2003 INCREASES BY 3 POINTS


All India Consumer Price Index Number for Industrial Workers (CPI-IW) on base 1982=100 for the month of June, 2003 has increased by 3 points to stand at 497 (four hundred & ninety seven). The increase in index is mainly due to rise in the prices of Rice, fish fresh, onion, vegetables & fruits, kerosene oil, etc. All India consumer Price Index Number for June, 2002 had increased by 4 points.

The rise/fall in index varies from centre to centre. In 48 centres increase in index was noticed between 1 to 14 points, in 12 centres it remained constant and in 10 centres it recorded a decrease of 1 to 5 points when compared to previous month.

During the month Thiruvananthapuram centre experienced the maximum increase of 14 points on account of increase in prices of rice, fish fresh, fish dry, chillies dry, veg. & fruits, bidi, saree synthetic etc Whereas, Ludhina Centre experienced the maximum decrease of 5 points. The decrease in index was due to decrease in prices of onion, vegetables & fruits, kerosene oil etc. However, the index remained stationary in 12 centres viz. Ghaziabad, Chandigarh, Pondicherry, Mumbai, guwahati, Bhavnagar, Yamunanagar, amritsar, D.D Tinsukia, Jaipur, Surat and Ajmer..

The index in respect of six main centres during June, 2003 stood at the following level:

  1. Ahmedabad 496
  2. Bangalore 477
  3. Kolkatta 541
  4. Chennai 540
  5. Delhi 569
  6. Mumbai 586

The point to point rate of inflation, based on the CPI-IW has decreased from 4.66% in May 2003 to 4.41% in June, 2003. In June, 2002 it was 4.16%.
