DR. SATYANARAYAN JATIYA INAUGURATES
DISTRICT DISABILITY REHABILITATION CENTRE AT ALOT
CALLS FOR
GREATER LOCAL COMMUNITY PARTICIPATION
The Minister for
Social Justice and Empowerment Dr. Satyanarayan Jatiya inaugurated
the District Disability Rehabilitation Centre at Alot in Madhya
Pradesh today. Located in the Civil Hospital Campus, the Centre
will provide rehabilitation services to locomotor handicapped,
mentally handicapped, hearing handicapped and visually handicapped
persons. These will include medical services like corrective surgery
or fitment of aids and appliances and psychological assessment
and guidance. Other facilities at the Centre would include assessment
of type and degree of disability, coordination with medical authorities
for issue of disability certificates and referral for suitable
job placements.
Inaugurating
the Centre, Dr. Jatiya called for greater involvement of local
community in rehabilitation services. The Minister said the purpose
of setting up such Centres at district level is to provide integrated
rehabilitation services to the disabled at their doorstep. He
expressed the hope that the Centre would not only help in alleviating
the physical and personal sufferings of persons with disabilities
but also in making them productive citizens in order to mitigate
their economic distress.
The Ministry
of Social Justice and Empowerment has provided Rs. 9.52 lakh as
recurring grant and Rs. 3.62 lakh as non- recurring grant for
establishing the Centre. A District Management Team headed by
the District Collector will manage the Centre. The Ali Yavar Jung
national Institute for the Hearing Handicapped, Mumbai would,
as implementing agency, provide infrastructure and manpower for
first three years. After that the District Management Team will
identify a suitable agency to run the Centre.
