CRIMES AGAINST WOMEN

RAJYA SABHA

The crime against women has registered an increase of 1.8% during 2001 over 2000. The available data indicates an increasing trend during the last three years for cases registered under IPC. The crimes committed against women as reported in 1998, 1999,2000 and 2001 were 131475, 135771, 141373 and 143795, respectively.

Giving this information in the Rajya Sabha during question hour, the Minister of State for Home, Shri Harin Pathak said ‘Public Order’ and ‘Police’ are State subjects and as such, detection, registration, investigation and prevention of crime are primarily the responsibility of the State Governments. However, the Government of India has been advising the State Governments, from time to time, to give more focused attention to improving the administration of criminal justice system and take such measures as are necessary for the prevention of crimes against women.

As a result of the overall efforts of the central Government most of the States and the Union Territories have set up special cells to deal with crime against women. He said many states have set up police stations managed exclusively by women police personnel to deal with crime related to women and also inculcate a sense of confidence and security in women to approach police stations without fear or apprehension.
