459 SCHEMES SANCTIONED UNDER ACCELERATED URBAN WATER SUPPLY PROGRAMME

Government has approved 444 schemes under the Accelerated Urban Water Supply Programme (AUWSP) in various States during the last three years (2000-01 to 2002-03). Cost of these schemes is estimated to be around Rs. 643.21 crore. In addition, 15 schemes costing Rs. 22.70 crore have been sanctioned during the current financial year till 30.6.2003.

Uttar Pradesh tops in the number of AUWSP schemes sanctioned, where 193 schemes costing Rs. 152.58 crore have been sanctioned. In Uttaranchal 12 schemes costing Rs. 24.09 crore have been sanctioned so far. This information was given by the Minister of State for Urban Development and Poverty Alleviation Shri Pon. Radhakrishnan in Lok Sabha today in a written reply to the question of Shri P.L. Mohale and Shri Rajo Singh.

The Accelerated Urban Water Supply Programme is a Centrally sponsored scheme initiated with the objective of solving the drinking water problems in the towns having population of less than 20 thousand as per 1991 census. The scheme is funded by the Central and State Governments in ratio of 50:50.
