DISASTER MANAGEMENT COMMUNICATION ON RAILWAYS

The Ministry of Railways has issued directives to Zonal Railways asking them to put in place an efficient disaster management communication system.

The directions include provision of one additional satellite phone for each Zonal and Divisional headquarters to make availability of two such phones, besides ISD connection at each Zonal headquarters and Divisional Control Office to enable them to contact accident site on satellite phones and powers to hire cell phones by Station Manager or Station Master for use of stranded passengers.

The other important directive relates to provision of 30 Walkie Talkie sets and two VHF sets for all Accident Relief Trains (ARTs) at Divisional headquarters.

The directives follow recommendations of the Disaster Management Committee to improve rescue and relief measures following train accidents. This is intended to improve customer satisfaction of rail users.
