‘MUSEUM OF MOVING IMAGES’ TO BE
SET UP IN MUMBAI
The Government has
envisaged to establish a Museum of Moving Images (MOMI) in Film
Division Complex, Mumbai, first ever of its kind in Asian Region
with a view to give impetus to the movement of showcasing the
history of Indian Cinema and its global impact. The main objectives
of the proposed MOMI are to encapsulate the socio-cultural history
of India as revealed through the evolution of cinema, to develop
as a research centre focussing on the effect of cinema on the
mind and society and to serve as a living Museum.
Some of the Resources
for display in the MOMI are contemplated to be consisting of;
a) Classical films in various languages, silent films, films in
new genre, box office hits from commercial/contemporary as well
as classical segments. b) Posters and stills of films both old
and new. c) Handwritten manuscripts of lyrics, films scripts etc.
d) Books on films, cinema, various articles, reviews. e) Archive
value films, trailers and other material including costumes, etc,
sets, publicity material and other items of significance. f) Vintage
equipment, ancillaries of all items.
The proposed MOMI
will have various sections like, technological progress in cinema,
thematic progress in fashion & costumes, plurality of Indian
cinema, homage to the stalwarts of Indian cinema, hand on training
in film making, evolution of censorship policy, shooting floors
in Gulshan Mahal, histroy of music and evolution of lyrics, thematic
trends and research.
In the run-up to
the establishment of MOMI, it has been decided that an exhibition
of various articles conforming to resources of the Museum as mentioned
above would be held in October/November, 2003 at Gulsham Mahal,
Films Division, Mumbai. The Film Division has appealed to people
to make available to it suitable items with them for display at
the weeklong exhibition.
